New Zealand squad announced for Test series against England and Ireland
New Zealand Squad Announcement: The New Zealand Cricket Board has announced its squad for the upcoming Test series against England and Ireland. Veteran batsman Kane Williamson makes a return to the squad and is now on the verge of reaching the milestone of 10,000 runs in Test cricket.
England Test Squad Announcement:
The England team will play a single Test match against Ireland, followed by a three-match Test series against England; this series is set to commence later this month, on May 27. The Test match against Ireland—a four-day contest—will be played starting May 27.
Will Young has been dropped from New Zealand's Test squad—a decision that comes as quite a surprise. Henry Nicholls has been preferred over him. This 19-member squad will first play a Test match against Ireland in Belfast starting May 27, followed by a three-match Test series against England beginning June 4.
Kyle Jamieson is set to make his return to Test cricket for the first time since February 2024. Due to a stress fracture in his back, he had been sidelined from this format for over two years; however, he will now focus on red-ball cricket—a format in which he boasts an impressive record.
The Return of Two Key Players to the New Zealand Squad:
24-year-old O'Rourke, who successfully made his mark during Jamieson's absence, has returned to the squad. The 35-year-old veteran, Kane Williamson (108 Tests, 9,461 runs), had hinted at retirement last year. However, he has now declared himself available for the upcoming four Test matches. He stated that, going forward, he would decide his future on a 'series-by-series' basis.
Head Coach Rob Walter remarked that having the fast-bowling unit back at full strength ahead of a busy period of Test cricket is a significant morale booster. He said, 'It is a matter of great delight for us to embark on this next phase of continuous red-ball cricket with all our fast bowlers fit and ready. Kyle Jamieson had been undergoing a process to prepare his body for Test cricket, and he is now truly fit and strong.'
New Zealand Squad Highlights:
- Christian Clarke, Michael Rae, Will Young, and Ben Sears have been included in the squad for the Ireland Test.
- Jacob Duffy will not be available for these tours, as he and his wife are expecting the birth of their first child.
- Mitchell Santner's selection may be considered later in the series, subject to his recovery from a shoulder injury.
