The 2026 edition of the World Cup football's most prestigious tournament is set to be a monumental event. FIFA has decided to increase the number of participating teams in the World Cup; furthermore, for the first time, the tournament will be hosted across three nations, with North America serving as the host region.

This 2026 tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will feature 48 participating teams, making it the largest World Cup in history. The United States and Mexico have hosted the tournament previously: the U.S. hosted the 1994 edition, while the 1970 and 1986 finals took place in Mexico. For Canada, hosting World Cup matches marks an entirely new experience.

The draw for the group stage took place on December 5, at which point all qualifying nations learned the identities of their opponents and their potential paths to reaching the final became clear. The exact dates and venues for all matches were announced on December 6.

2026 World Cup Tournament Format

The 2026 World Cup will mark the inaugural tournament of this competition's new and expanded format. It will feature 48 participating teams, all of whom will commence their journey directly from the group stage. During the draw, the teams were divided into 12 groups of four; the top two teams from each group will automatically advance to the knockout stage. Additionally, the eight best third-placed teams will also secure a spot in the knockout stage.

Subsequently, a 32-team knockout stage will commence, based on the traditional 'single-elimination' (sudden death) format. All third-placed teams will face off against group winners; a specific stipulation for this round is that matches previously played during the group stage cannot be repeated in the 'Round of 32.' Any team reaching the semi-finals will play a total of eight matches: three in the group stage, and five in the knockout stage (Round of 32, Round of 16, Quarter-finals, Semi-finals, and either the Final or the third-place play-off match).
