The 'Bazball' era has come to an end today. The term 'Bazball' entered the cricketing lexicon four years ago when Ben Stokes became the captain of the England Test team and New Zealand legend Brendon McCullum was appointed head coach. However, McCullum stepped down as England's Test head coach on Sunday. Just days prior, Ben Stokes had retired from international cricket. With McCullum's resignation, the 'Bazball' era has also concluded.

When Brendon McCullum took over as the head coach of England's Test team, he made several bold statements. Subsequently, he implemented necessary changes within the squad and altered the players' style of play. In fact, following his arrival, England adopted an aggressive approach to Test cricket that came to be known as 'Bazball'.

Brendon McCullum's record as England's head coach:

McCullum's tenure as Test coach began in 2022. Under his guidance, England embraced a new brand of aggressive and fearless cricket, dubbed 'Bazball'. This strategy yielded excellent initial results, with England securing several memorable victories. The team's batters adopted a high-risk approach, aiming to play Test cricket at a rapid pace.

In numerous Test matches, England scored around 400 runs in a single day; on some occasions, they even surpassed the 400-run mark within a day's play. It was McCullum who brought batters like Ben Duckett and Harry Brook into the Test squad. However, the team's performance has declined in recent times.

England's record during McCullum's tenure:

England lost seven of their last nine Test matches. This includes a 4-1 defeat in the Ashes series played in Australia and a 2-1 loss in the home series against New Zealand. The defeat against New Zealand marked England's first home series loss (in a series of three or more Tests) in 14 years.

During McCullum's time as head coach, England played a total of 49 Test matches. The team won 27 and lost 20 of these games, while two ended in a draw.

It is worth noting that Brendon McCullum will continue as the head coach of England's T20 and ODI teams; he has stepped down only from the role of Test team head coach. The ECB has confirmed that the search for a new Test head coach will begin immediately. Meanwhile, McCullum's contract as head coach for the white-ball formats runs until the 2027 ODI World Cup.
