Chennai Super Kings, captained by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, bought seven players in the IPL mini auction on Friday (December 23) in Kochi. He added England Test captain Ben Stokes as well as India batsman Ajinkya Rahane and New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Jamieson. The Chennai team had 18 players before the auction. Rs 20.45 crore was left in his purse.
After the retirement of Dwayne Bravo, Chennai needed a player who could bowl in the death overs and make useful contributions with the bat as well. Chennai has tried to make up for this shortcoming by buying star all-rounder Ben Stokes. Stokes base price was Rs 2 crore. The team bought him for Rs 16.25 crore.
Ben Stokes bought by Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) initially bid for Stokes. When the bid reached Rs 7 crore, Lucknow Supergiants entered. RCB left here. Bidding went on between Rajasthan and Lucknow for some time. Then the Sunrisers Hyderabad team joined the bid with Rs 7.75 crore. Sunrisers distanced themselves when Lucknow made a bid of Rs 15 crore. Here is the entry of Chennai. He then defeated Lucknow and bought Ben Stokes.
CSK bought five players in base price, Chennai bought Kyle Jameson for a base price of Rs 1 crore and Ajinkya Rahane for a base price of Rs 50 lakhs. The team added Sheikh Rashid, Bhagat Verma, and Ajay Mandal to their base price of Rs 20 lakh each. Nishant Sindhu, he had a clash with Kolkata. In the end, Chennai bought Nishant for Rs 60 lakhs with a base price of Rs 20 lakhs.
