The 12th edition of the Women's Big Bash League begins at Melbourne’s Junction Oval with an afternoon match, featuring the Melbourne Renegades against the Sydney Thunder. This will be followed by a clash between the Melbourne Stars and the defending champions, the Hobart Hurricanes, at the same venue.
The Hurricanes secured their maiden title last season by defeating the Perth Scorchers by eight wickets in the final. Following Elyse Villani’s retirement from all forms of cricket, Nicola Carey has taken over the captaincy. Danni Wyatt-Hodge has been ruled out for this season, with Chamari Athapaththu brought into the squad as her replacement.
A total of 40 matches will be played during the league stage, with the top-ranked team advancing directly to the final. The teams finishing third and fourth will face off in a knockout match; the winner of this encounter will then take on the second-placed team in a 'Challenger' match to determine the second finalist. The final is scheduled to take place on December 5th.
