The International Cricket Council (ICC) has introduced a major change to the rules of Test cricket. In fact, Test matches often have to be called off prematurely due to poor light. As a solution to this problem, the ICC has approved the use of the pink ball during periods of poor visibility. However, for the time being, this measure is being implemented strictly on a trial basis.

An ICC Board meeting was held in Ahmedabad on May 31—coinciding with the day of the IPL 2026 final. The decision regarding the use of the pink ball was taken during this very meeting. The objective behind this decision is to maximize the number of overs bowled in Test matches. Typically, play is halted early due to poor light conditions, which results in a reduction in the total number of overs bowled during a match.

It is worth noting that the first-ever Pink Ball Test match in the history of cricket was played in 2015. In that match, Australia defeated New Zealand by three wickets. Since then, Pink Ball matches have been played periodically between various nations. The use of the pink ball during periods of poor light will be permissible only if both teams mutually agree to it.

Coaches Permitted on the Field:

The ICC has introduced another significant change. Now, during matches, coaches will be permitted to enter the field of play to speak with the players whenever a drinks break occurs. Another major decision was also finalized during the meeting held in Ahmedabad. Furthermore, match officials will now be able to utilize Hawk-Eye data to identify bowlers whose bowling actions are suspected of being illegal. This new rule will come into effect on October 1, 2026.
