Tim David Suspended for IPL 2027 Opener Following Code of Conduct Breach in IPL 2026 Final
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Tim David will miss his team's opening fixture of the IPL 2027 season. The hard-hitting batsman has been handed a one-match suspension alongside a 50 percent match fee fine after breaching Level 1 of the IPL Code of Conduct during the IPL 2026 final against Gujarat Titans on Sunday.
The Incident
The flashpoint occurred during the 10th over of the first innings. Following a heated moment, David aggressively threw an ice bag in the direction of on-field umpire Nitin Menon.
The match referee found David in violation of Article 2.9 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which strictly prohibits:
"Throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment such as a water bottle) at or near a Player, Team Official, Umpire, Match Referee or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during a Match."
Why the Suspension?
While a Level 1 offense usually results only in a match fee fine, David's disciplinary record this season triggered an automatic ban. The incident cost him two additional demerit points, bringing his total tally to five demerit points for the recently concluded IPL 2026 season.
Under IPL disciplinary guidelines, accumulating five or more demerit points within a single season leads to an immediate one-match suspension. Consequently, David will be barred from playing in RCB's first game of the IPL 2027 season (or the opening match of any franchise he represents next year).
A Season of Disciplinary Trouble
This marks David's third Level 1 offense in the IPL 2026 edition:
- Match 20: First offense (1 Demerit Point)
- Match 54: Second offense (2 Demerit Points)
- IPL 2026 Final: Third offense (2 Demerit Points)
RCB will now have to plan their middle-order combination without the Australian power-hitter for their first match next year.
