Country First: Mitchell Santner turns down lucrative BBL offer, prioritizes Test cricket and captaincy
New Zealand's limited-overs captain, Mitchell Santner, has prioritized playing for his country over participating in overseas T20 leagues. Santner rejected a highly lucrative offer from Australia's Big Bash League (BBL), which would have required him to relinquish his New Zealand Cricket (NZC) central contract. Santner stated that the desire to play in upcoming Test matches against India and Australia, along with the wish to retain the captaincy of the Kiwi team, were the primary reasons behind his decision.
Adelaide Strikers had offered a two-year contract
According to a report by News Corp, the Adelaide Strikers—who recently signed Ben Stokes—had offered Santner a significant two-year deal.
Speaking to the New Zealand Herald, Santner admitted the offer was very tempting:
"It was a really good offer; I won't deny that. I did consider it, but when you look at the upcoming summer season—featuring India's tour of New Zealand (white-ball and Tests) followed by a tour of Australia—there couldn't be a bigger opportunity. Even if I don't play every Test match, I feel I have a crucial role to play in the team."
Did not feel right to captain without a central contract
Santner has been the captain of New Zealand's ODI and T20 teams since late 2024. Under his leadership, the team has reached the finals of the Champions Trophy and the T20 World Cup.
There was speculation that he could have continued as captain even on a 'casual contract,' but Santner did not consider this appropriate.- Santner clarified, "I didn't want to give up the captaincy. Playing only in leagues without a central contract and then returning to captain the country didn't feel right to me at this stage."
- Under NZC's central contract rules, players are required to be available for the 'Super Smash' in January—dates that clash with the BBL and SA20.
Franchise Cricket vs. National Duty
In recent times, several New Zealand players (such as Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne, and most recently Mark Chapman) have opted for casual agreements over central contracts to play franchise cricket. In this climate, Santner prioritizing Test cricket and the national captaincy for New Zealand over lucrative T20 leagues comes as a major relief for Kiwi cricket.
