In the last 16 seasons, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) have won the title 5 times each. The credit for this success is always given to Chennai captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and former Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma. Coach has a lot more to offer than this. Former New Zealand team captain Stephen Fleming retired from international cricket in March 2008. After this, he also played 10 matches for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) team in the first season of IPL. But in the very next season i.e. 2009, Fleming was made the coach of Chennai team. Who is coaching the CSK team. During this period, he has made Chennai team win the title 5 times. In between, the Chennai team was suspended in 2016 and 2017, when he took over the coaching of Rising Pune Supergiants. During this period, Pune team also played the 2017 final once.
Former Sri Lankan team captain Mahela Jayawardene played IPL till 2013. After this, in 2017, Jayawardene was made the coach of Mumbai Indians. He made the team champion in the very first season. After this, under the coaching of Jayawardene, Mumbai also won the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Jayawardene is also the second player to win 3 titles as a coach.

Former Australian cricketer Trevor Bayliss is considered to be the most successful coach in IPL history. During his coaching, he has made Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) win the title twice. Under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir, KKR team won the title in 2012 and 2014. Bayliss was the coach then. Bayliss is also one of those players who, apart from IPL, has led the team to titles while coaching in BBL and CPL.
Ricky Ponting is also considered the best captain of international cricket. Former Australian captain Ponting played cricket for Mumbai in IPL. After this he also coached the Mumbai team from 2014 to 2016. During this period, Ponting also made the team champion in 2015. After this, in 2018, Ponting was made the coach of Delhi Capitals and he is still working on this post. Under his coaching, Delhi made it to the playoffs for 3 consecutive years (from 2019 to 2021).
Former Indian team fast bowler Ashish Nehra is the most successful coach of IPL. He made a splash as a player in the IPL till 2016. Then after retirement, Nehra was made the bowling coach of RCB team for 2018 and 2019. Nehra showed his true talent in the 2022 season. This season saw the entry of a new team Gujarat Titans (GT). Nehra was made its head coach. While the captaincy was handed over to all-rounder Hardik Pandya. Nehra had made Gujarat champion in the very first season of his coaching. After this, in 2023, Gujarat team lost in the final.
