The Malta national cricket team is the team that represents the Republic of Malta in international cricket. The team is organized by the Malta Cricket Association, which became an affiliate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1998. and an associate member in 2017. A Malta national team first played a match in 1891 when a Malta XVIII played an English team on a tour of Australia. The team was not revived until 1990, when it participated in the European Cricketer Cup in Guernsey. Since then, Malta has appeared regularly in European Cricket Council tournaments, generally in the lower divisions.
Malta has a climate that enables cricket to be played throughout the year and encourages visiting teams to come and play on the island. Malta has two grounds: the Marsa Cricket Ground, in existence for over a century, and the Hal Safi Cricket Ground, which is rarely used.
Since 1990, Malta have taken part in 16 international tournaments, competing against 25 cricketing nations. Malta’s best performance in ICC Europe tournaments was in the 2001 ECC Trophy when it finished third. Malta were successful hosts of the Malta T20 International tournament in 2013 and were crowned champions once again in 2014 when they lifted the Pan European T20 trophy in Hungary. The national team’s most recent victories have come against Hungary, Poland, Russia and the Czech Republic.
