People are drawing comparisons between the story of the ancient Greek epic 'The Odyssey' and India's sacred epic, the 'Ramayan'. Many social media users claim that the storylines are virtually identical.

In terms of antiquity, both epics are extremely old from historical and cultural perspectives; however, the Ramayan is considered to be of greater antiquity.
- Timeline of the Ramayan: According to modern historians and linguists, the Ramayan was penned by Maharshi Valmiki between the 5th and 3rd centuries BC. However, based on astronomical dating and Hindu beliefs, the story dates back approximately 7,000 years (5114 BC), having survived through oral traditions (Shruti and Smriti) for centuries before being recorded in writing.
- Timeline of The Odyssey: This epic, composed by the Greek poet Homer, is believed to date back to the late 8th or early 7th century BC (approximately 725–675 BC).
Conclusion: According to traditional Hindu beliefs, the events of the Ramayana took place thousands of years before the composition of The Odyssey. However, academic scholarship generally dates the surviving Valmiki Ramayana later than Homer's Odyssey.
Story Comparison: Shocking Similarities Between the Ramayana and The Odyssey

Homer's Greek epic, The Odyssey, shares its narrative framework with the Ramayana, revealing some astonishing similarities:
1. The Exile and Long Journey of the Hero
In the Ramayana, Lord Rama undergoes a grueling 14-year exile, wandering through forests far from his palace. Similarly, in The Odyssey, the hero King Odysseus spends ten years wandering the seas and unknown islands cursed by the gods while trying to return home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Both heroes remain separated from their homelands for years.
2. The Loyal Wife and Palace Crisis
In the Ramayana, Mother Sita is deceitfully abducted by Ravana, the ruler of Lanka; yet, even while held captive in the Ashoka Vatika, she remains steadfast in her purity and dignity. Meanwhile, in The Odyssey, Odysseus's wife, Penelope, finds herself besieged by unscrupulous suitors within the palace. Believing Odysseus to be dead, they seek to usurp the kingdom by forcing Penelope into marriage. However, Penelope cleverly keeps them at bay for years, remaining loyal to her husband.
3. Returning Home in Disguise
In The Odyssey, when Odysseus returns to his kingdom, he does not launch a direct attack. Instead, he enters his own palace disguised as an elderly beggar to distinguish between those who are loyal and those who are traitors. In the Ramayana, Hanuman assumes a disguise as a Brahmin during his journey to test the intentions of Lord Ram and Lakshmana when they first meet.
4. The Epic Bow Selection Plot Twist
A magical or immensely heavy bow serves as a major turning point in both stories. In the Ramayana, to marry Mother Sita (during the Swayamvara), Lord Ram strings the 'Shiva Dhanush' (Bow of Shiva) a weapon that no one else could even budge.
Similarly, at the end of the Odyssey, Penelope sets a condition for the wicked suitors: she will marry whoever can string Odysseus's old, heavy bow and hit the target. All the mighty suitors fail. Then, Odysseus disguised as a beggar stands up, effortlessly strings the bow, takes aim, and subsequently reveals his true identity to destroy the villains.
Ramayana vs Odyssey: Key Differences Beyond the Similarities

Although the story of the Odyssey might appear superficially similar to the Ramayana, there is a world of difference between their core messages:
Righteousness vs. Cunningness: While Lord Shri Ram is Maryada Purushottam, one who upholds Dharma (righteousness), truth, and ideals under all circumstances, the Greek hero Odysseus is portrayed as a 'wily and cunning' warrior who does not hesitate to resort to lies, deceit, and magical tricks to overcome obstacles.
The Ramayana is a sacred and revered scripture that imparts moral values for life, whereas the Odyssey is an adventure-filled epic fantasy from ancient Greece. That is why, when this story hits the screen infused with Nolan's cinematic creativity, audiences will experience a unique thrill even if some of its twists evoke memories of our Ramayana.
