Rumesh Pathirage made history in the final event with a throw of 89.75 meters. This marks Sri Lanka's first-ever gold medal in javelin athletics at the Commonwealth Games.
Two Indian athletes won silver and bronze medals in the event:
- Gold Medal: Rumesh Tharanga (Sri Lanka) – 89.75 meters
- Silver Medal: Neeraj Chopra (India) – 85.83 meters

While defeating Neeraj Chopra might seem like a massive milestone, the result did not come as a surprise to sports enthusiasts. Rumesh Tharanga is currently one of the world's best javelin throwers.
- World Lead: He holds the 'World Lead' (the longest throw globally) for this season with a distance of 92.62 meters.
- Rome Diamond League Record: The 23-year-old Rumesh became the first javelin thrower to cross the 90-meter mark in the 2026 season. He set a new meet record and a new national record for Sri Lanka by throwing the javelin 92.62 meters at the Rome Diamond League.

Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage is a multi-talented athlete from Sri Lanka, born on March 21, 2003, in Kalutara, Sri Lanka. The 23-year-old Rumesh is not only a world-class javelin thrower but also serves as an Aircraftman in the Sri Lanka Air Force. He received his schooling at the renowned St. Peter's College in Colombo.
Before becoming a javelin athlete, Rumesh was a medium-pace bowler. He used to bowl at speeds of 130 km/h and had clocked 134 km/h on the speed gun in the Under-18 (U18) category. He ranked second behind Ishan Malinga (who plays for Sri Lanka and SRH in the IPL).
Rumesh Pathirage: Family Background and Early Life
Rumesh inherited a passion for throwing sports. His father was a former discus and shot-put thrower. Under his father's guidance, Rumesh first entered the world of sports during his childhood with the discus throw. Later, in 2017, while studying at St. Peter's College, he picked up the javelin for the first time.

Rumesh Tharanga's Cricket Career & SRH Connection

Like most young Sri Lankans, cricket was Rumesh's first love. He began playing cricket in 2012 and was a right-arm medium-fast bowler.
Rumesh, who bowled at speeds of 130 km/h on the domestic circuit, clocked 134 km/h on the speed gun in the Under-18 (U18) category. At the time, he was considered the second-fastest young bowler in the country, trailing only Sri Lankan star bowler Ishan Malinga. While playing for St. Peter's College, he once took 5 wickets in a 4-over spell and also scored a half-century in the same match.
Although he did not get many opportunities to play for the Sri Lankan national team at the international level, he played club cricket domestically and was also part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) squad in the IPL.

His transition from cricket to athletics proved to be highly successful. He underwent high-level training in Australia under the guidance of Mike and Kelsey Barber:
- World U20 Championships (2022): Finished 7th in the final of the World U20 Championships held in Colombia.
- Asian Throwing Championship: Won gold medals in consecutive years (2024 and 2025) in Mokpo.
- World Athletics Championships (2025): Reached the final with a throw of 84.38 meters, becoming the first javelin thrower from Sri Lanka to qualify for a World Championship final.
- Rome Diamond League (2026): Achieved the 'World Lead' for the 2026 season in Rome by setting a new national and meet record of 92.62 meters.
