Reports suggest that the opening match of the upcoming season of the Australian T20 league—the Big Bash League (BBL)—will be played in India. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to announce this during his visit to Australia. PM Modi is currently on a three-nation tour, with Australia being the second leg of his journey.
What Tom Morris said about the BBL-
It is anticipated that the announcement regarding the first Big Bash League match to be held in India will be made during his Australian visit. Australian journalist Tom Morris shared details about this announcement; having previously reported on the subject, he has now revealed the date the announcement is set to be made.
He wrote on social media, "Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will announce this match in Melbourne on Friday (July 10). The match between the Renegades and the Scorchers is scheduled to be played in Chennai on December 12." Official confirmation from the BBL regarding this matter is still awaited.
BBL match to be held in India for the first time:
This will mark the first time a match from Australia's Big Bash League is played on Indian soil, making it a historic announcement.
According to reports, a five-member delegation from Cricket Australia visited Chennai to assess the facilities at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium and hold direct discussions with key BCCI representatives.
It is believed that both the BCCI and the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association responded positively to the initial proposal, giving Cricket Australia the confidence to move forward with their plans.
Reports also indicate that the Australians had initially considered hosting multiple BBL matches at various venues across India; however, due to time constraints, the plan was ultimately scaled back to just the season's opening match. Logistics could prove to be the biggest challenge for Australia regarding this match.
