Hockey World Cup 2026: The Indian men's hockey team suffered its first defeat in its second Pool D match of the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup 2026. In a crucial match played in Amstelveen, Netherlands, world number three England staged a remarkable second-half comeback to defeat India 4-2. While the Indian team dominated the first half, England displayed brilliant gameplay in the second half to secure a commanding victory.

India's brilliant comeback in the first half

England adopted an aggressive approach at the start of the match, and in the dying moments of the first quarter, Nicholas Bandurak scored a superb field goal to give his team a 1-0 lead. The Indian team then displayed a magnificent performance in the second quarter.

Captain Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner into a precise goal, bringing India level at 1-1. Shortly thereafter, Dilpreet Singh finished off a brilliant move with a goal, giving India a 2-1 lead—their first of the match.

England Dominates Second Half

Leading 2-1 at halftime, the Indian team could not maintain its momentum in the second half, and its defense crumbled under England's aggressive attacks. In the third quarter, Stuart Rushmere scored the equalizer, and shortly thereafter, Henry Croft found the back of the net to put England ahead 3-2.

In the final quarter, Nicholas Bandurak converted a penalty corner into a goal, extending England's lead to 4-2—a margin that proved sufficient for victory.

Do-or-Die Match Against Pakistan

Following this defeat, India's path to a direct entry into Round 2 from Pool D has become somewhat more difficult. To secure a spot in the next round, the Indian team must win its next pool match against Pakistan at all costs. However, if Wales fails to defeat England, even a draw against Pakistan could be enough for India to advance.
