ICC Approves $12.82 Million Loan for West Indies Cricket; A Look at the Board's Financial Status and Other Major ICC Decisions
Several major decisions regarding global cricket administration, membership, and financial assistance to member nations were taken at the ICC's annual meeting held in Edinburgh. The most significant decision was the approval of a loan worth US$12.82 million (approximately ₹107 crore) to help Cricket West Indies (CWI) overcome its financial crisis.
Lifeline for West Indies Cricket Amidst Financial Crisis
West Indies cricket has been grappling with a severe financial crisis for several years—an issue that former legendary players have consistently raised their voices about.
- Heavy Losses: According to audited statements for the financial year ending September 30, 2025, CWI incurred a net loss of $28 million, contrasting with a $24 million profit in the previous year.
- Future Projections: The board is projected to incur a loss of $26 million in the 2026 cycle as well. To address this funding gap, the West Indies board had sought a loan from the ICC and credit from commercial banks; this request has now been approved.
- Past Assistance: Previously, in 2012, the West Indies Cricket Board had received financial assistance from the ICC, alongside Zimbabwe. Additionally, during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) provided a $3 million loan, which West Indies subsequently repaid.
Other Key Decisions from the ICC Meeting
1. Mauritius Becomes ICC's 111th Member
As part of the expansion of global cricket, Mauritius has been officially declared the 111th member of the ICC.
The ICC now comprises 12 Full Members and 99 Associate Members.2. Major updates on Sri Lanka, Canada, and France cricket
- Canada Cricket: The conditions for the reinstatement of Cricket Canada have been approved. The Canadian board must fulfill these conditions to have the current suspension lifted.
- Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC): An update has been received regarding Sri Lanka Cricket's new amended constitution. However, Sri Lanka Cricket will not be permitted representation at ICC Board meetings until new elections for the board are held.
- France Cricket: France Cricket has been placed on official notice (warning) due to violations of ICC membership rules and criteria.
3. Formation of two new sub-committees
The ICC Board has constituted two important new committees to ensure smooth operations:
- Governance Review Committee: This committee includes Devajit Saikia (BCCI), Dr. Mohammed Moosajee (Cricket South Africa), and Dr. Ross Reavaz (ICC Independent Director).
- Franchise League Committee: Bangladesh stalwart Tamim Iqbal has been appointed as the chairman of this committee. Other members include Dr. Rudi van Vuuren (Namibia), Devajit Saikia (BCCI), Richard Gould (ECB), and Todd Greenberg (Cricket Australia).
