IPL 2027: Major overhaul in Delhi Capitals' coaching staff; Chaminda Vaas and Amit Mishra appointed bowling coaches, Ganguly and Yuvraj to take charge
Delhi Capitals have finalized a major reshuffle of their coaching setup for IPL 2027. Former Sri Lankan pace legend Chaminda Vaas and former Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra are set to become the new bowling coaches for the team.
This duo will be part of a brand-new coaching staff led by former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, who will serve as the head coach. Meanwhile, former explosive all-rounder Yuvraj Singh will take on the role of the team's batting coach.
Chaminda Vaas's IPL coaching debut
Chaminda Vaas—the most successful fast bowler in Sri Lankan history (with 355 Test wickets and 400 ODI wickets)—will be seen coaching in the IPL for the first time. The 52-year-old previously played for the Deccan Chargers from 2008 to 2010.
- Coaching Career: Vaas has served as the bowling coach for the Sri Lankan senior men's team across three separate stints (2012–15, 2016–17, and 2022).
- Additionally, he has served as a consultant for New Zealand and as the coach for Ireland during the 2016 T20 World Cup.
- Franchise Experience: Vaas has served as the head coach for NYS Lagos in the 2024 Zim Afro T10 League and for Kandy Royals in the LPL.
Amit Mishra's New Role: IPL Veteran Spinner Turns Coach
42-year-old Amit Mishra, counted among the IPL's most successful leg-spinners, is also stepping into a coaching role in the tournament for the first time.
- Mishra is the only bowler in IPL history to have taken three hat-tricks.
- Having claimed 174 wickets in 162 matches between 2008 and 2024, Mishra ranks 10th on the list of the IPL's all-time leading wicket-takers.
- He played his last IPL match for Lucknow Super Giants in 2024 and announced his retirement last September.
Vaas and Mishra have already begun working with young players at the DC Academy in Delhi.
Key Reason for the Change in Coaching Staff
Following IPL 2024, Delhi Capitals' co-owners—GMR Group and JSW Sports—agreed on a two-year rotation model. Operations for the 2025 and 2026 seasons were under GMR's purview (featuring Hemang Badani as head coach and Munaf Patel as bowling coach). Now, this new coaching setup is being put in place for the next two-year cycle.
