A total of 16 Indian badminton players, including two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy, will be part of the BWF World Championships 2023 draw, scheduled to be held on August 10 at Badminton World Federation headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The World Badminton Championships 2023 draw starts at 12:30 PM IST and will be live streamed in India. PV Sindhu, seeded 16th, is the only Indian shuttler in the 2023 BWF World Championships women’s singles draw following London 2012 Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal’s withdrawal.
PV Sindhu, the 2019 world champion, silver medallist in 2017 and 2018 and bronze medal winner in 2013 and 2014, is India’s most successful player in the history of the world badminton championships.
However, the double Olympic medallist has struggled for form this year, failing to get past the opening round in seven of her 14 BWF World Tour tournaments this season. HS Prannoy will be the best-seeded Indian in men’s singles at nine, followed by Lakshya Sen - the 11th seed. Both are former bronze medal winners at the competition.
Meanwhile, Kidambi Srikanth, who won the silver at Huelva 2021 and is the only Indian male badminton player to ever make the final at the world championships, will be unseeded in the draw.
The in-form Indian duo of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy will be the second seeds in men’s doubles behind Indonesian icons Fajar Alfian Muhammad Rian Ardianto - the reigning All England champions. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand are the 16th seeds in women’s doubles.
The BWF World Championships 2023 will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, from August 21 to 27.
