Odisha to build 89 indoor stadia after successful association with Hockey India.
The coastal state which is prone to natural calamities decided to construct the stadium in such a manner that, the sports facilities structures can withstand wind speeds up to 200 km thereby can also be used as a cyclone and flood shelters when needed and also can be converted into 50-100 bedded field hospitals during the time of Health emergency.

Besides, the government also aims to use these stadiums to organize training programs, official meetings, and exam centers. The stadiums will have facilities for badminton, table tennis, yoga, gymnasium, etc. The indoor hall space can be utilized for most of the indoor games and can be converted as per the local popularity of various indoor sports.
The release further said the State government has been constantly focussing on the development of sports in the State. In the last few years, the State has earned the tag of an important place for the development of sports and organizing sports events. This project has been conceived to ensure transformation in the field of sports under the 5T initiatives. The plan for this infrastructure has been prepared under the direction of the Chief Minister in consultation with peoples’ representatives and sportspersons.

Briefing media persons after the meeting, Odisha Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mohapatra said the State Cabinet approved construction of 89 multi-purpose indoor stadiums under the “Urban Sports Infrastructure Development Project’ at a total project cost of Rs 693.35 crore to be completed over the next 18 months. With this project, the image of Odisha as an emerging sports powerhouse will be further strengthened.
