ICC World Cup 2023 will be a prominent ICC tournament that will take place towards the end of this year. ICC World Cup 2023 starts on October 5 in India and a total of 10 teams are part of the tournament.
Sri Lanka will play their first match of the tournament against South Africa. The encounter takes place on October 7. Sri Lanka will play a total of 9 games during the league stage. Their final league clash is against New Zealand on November 9.
Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, England, and the Netherlands are 10 teams that will battle with each other in the ICC World Cup 2023. The final takes place on November 19 in Ahmedabad.
Sri Lanka did not get a direct entry into ICC World Cup 2023. They had to play in the Qualifiers round to get a spot in the league. However, Sri Lanka showcased a marvelous performance in the tournament. They won the final and also remained unbeaten throughout the tournament.
Sri Lanka failed to reach the semi-finals in the previous edition of the ODI World Cup in 2019. Sri Lanka has won the ODI WC title once in the 1996 edition. Hence, they aim for their second ODI World Cup title in ICC World Cup 2023.
Dasun Shanaka is the skipper of Sri Lanka in ODIs currently. Hence, he will lead the team in the ICC World Cup 2023 too. Some key players for the team are Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Lihuru Kumara.
In what may come as a massive setback for Sri Lanka, allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out of the ODI World Cup 2023. As per a report in Sports Hour, Hasaranga would not take part in the marquee event in India. He has been ruled out due to an hamstring tear. Sri Lanka Cricket still have four more days to confirm Hasaranga’s replacement as September 28 is the last day of submission of the final WC squads.
