LPG Consumption in India: 20,000 tons of LPG have reached Gujarat: Amidst the ongoing global turmoil, a significant and reassuring piece of news has emerged for India. Amidst concerns regarding crude oil and gas supply chains, a large marine tanker loaded with LPG has safely arrived in India. The arrival of this consignment is expected to lend some stability to India's energy market and supply infrastructure.
Gas Tanker Safely Reaches Gujarat-
Amidst the severe tensions prevailing in West Asia, a massive vessel named 'Simi'—carrying a cargo of 20,000 tons of LPG—has safely arrived at the Deendayal Port in Kandla, Gujarat. Operating under existing security surveillance protocols, 'Simi' has become the 11th such LPG tanker to successfully navigate perilous routes, such as the Strait of Hormuz. This cargo vessel traversed this challenging route via the Strait of Hormuz on May 13. The credit for the safe completion of this tanker's voyage goes largely to the 21 crew members on board, comprising 8 Ukrainian and 13 Filipino nationals.
How Long Will 20,000 Tons of LPG Last?
Although 20,000 tons of LPG may sound like an enormous quantity, for a vast nation like India, it amounts to merely a few hours' worth of supply. According to statistics, this volume of gas would suffice to meet our country's consumption needs for only one-third of a day—that is, a mere 8 hours. The primary reason for this is that India has currently emerged as the world's second-largest consumer of LPG. The demand for gas here—ranging from ordinary households to the commercial sector—is so immense that even a massive consignment of several thousand tons is insufficient to meet the country's requirements for a full 24-hour period.
Daily LPG Consumption Statistics:
A deeper analysis of LPG demand in India reveals that, on ordinary days, there is a massive daily consumption of approximately 55,000 to 60,000 metric tons. During peak seasons or festive periods, the country's total daily gas demand often surges, reaching levels of 80,000 to 90,000 tons per day. To meet this immense national requirement, domestic refineries operate continuously. Major public sector enterprises—such as Indian Oil and BPCL—produce approximately 40% to 60% of the country's total LPG demand domestically.
Annual Demand and Storage Reserves:
To maintain its energy security, India is required to procure LPG on a massive scale every year. The country's total annual LPG demand has now reached a range of approximately 31 million to 33 million tons. To manage this substantial demand, India possesses a total LPG storage capacity of approximately 1.6 million tons (or 16 lakh tons). According to official statistics from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, this extensive storage infrastructure ensures that India consistently maintains a "rolling stock"—that is, a ready-made inventory backup—sufficient to last for approximately 45 days.
