Currently, the cheapest petrol in India is available in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Here, the price hovers around ₹82.46 per liter. In contrast, if we look at Delhi, the price of petrol stands at approximately ₹94.77 per liter.
Indian law permits individuals to travel freely across states with their vehicles, provided the vehicle's original, factory-fitted fuel tank is filled to capacity. There are no legal restrictions on carrying petrol inside a car or motorcycle's standard fuel tank.
Can You Carry Extra Petrol or Diesel Separately?
However, the legal situation changes entirely if an individual attempts to transport petrol separately in a container, jerrycan, or drum. Under the Petroleum Act, 1934, and associated safety regulations, an individual is permitted to store or transport—for personal use—a maximum of only 30 liters of petrol without a license.
Even within this 30-liter limit, specific safety conditions apply. The petrol must be stored exclusively in approved, leak-proof metal containers. Transporting fuel in plastic bottles, unsafe jerrycans, or open containers is considered hazardous.
If an individual wishes to transport more than 30 liters of petrol outside of their vehicle's fuel tank, they are required to obtain the appropriate license and clearance from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO). Violations of these regulations may result in heavy fines, the confiscation of the vehicle, and—in severe cases—imprisonment.
Carrying Petrol or Diesel in Containers Has Been Banned
