India’s popular YouTuber and Bigg Boss OTT 2 winner Elvish Yadav has found himself embroiled in yet another controversy after making racially insensitive and derogatory remarks about Bigg Boss 18 contestant and Miss Arunachal, Chum Darang. Following widespread backlash, the National Commission for Women (NCW) summoned Elvish for questioning, after which he issued a public apology.

The Controversy: Elvish Yadav’s Offensive Comments

On February 11, 2025, a podcast episode starring Elvish Yadav and fellow Bigg Boss 18 participant Rajat Dalal was broadcast, sparking the uproar. Elvish made derogatory comments regarding Chum Darang's name, caste, and appearance during the conversation. He also crudely referenced her role in the critically acclaimed film Gangubai Kathiawadi, implying vulgar connotations.

Elvish had said, “Karanvir must have had Covid for sure because who likes Chum, brother? How can someone’s taste be so bad? Even her name ‘Chum’ sounds vulgar… Her name is Chum, and she worked in Gangubai Kathiawadi—it’s obscene.”

His comments were met with severe criticism, with many calling out his racist and misogynistic undertones. Social media users and activists condemned his remarks, leading to the NCW taking action.

NCW Summons Elvish Yadav

After the clip went viral, the NCW issued a notice to Elvish Yadav, demanding an explanation for his offensive statements. On April 22, 2025, he appeared before the commission in Delhi for questioning.

Elvish Yadav’s Public Apology

Elvish spoke to the reporters as he left the NCW headquarters and apologized. He stated, “As we grow older, we mature and learn from our mistakes. Many people misunderstood my intention behind the comment, but if my words hurt anyone, I accept my mistake.”

He further added, “If people were offended by my statements, then I must have said something wrong. That’s why I came to the NCW office and apologized. I hold no personal grudge against anyone. I regret my words and sincerely apologize.”

Public Reaction

While some of Elvish’s supporters accepted his apology, others remained skeptical, questioning the sincerity of his remorse. Many netizens pointed out that such derogatory remarks reflect deep-seated prejudices and demanded stricter accountability for public figures.

Chum Darang, who has yet to publicly respond to the incident, has received an outpouring of support from fans and fellow celebrities who have condemned Elvish’s behavior.

Conclusion

Elvish Yadav’s controversial remarks have once again highlighted the need for greater sensitivity and responsibility among influencers. While his apology may have diffused some tension, the incident serves as a reminder that public figures must be mindful of their words and the impact they have on marginalized communities.
