Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) is shaping up to be one of Rockstar Games' most ambitious open-world titles yet. New details have revealed several features designed to make the fictional state of Leonida feel more alive, including hurricanes, dynamic weather, more than 170 animal species, a huge map and several new activities.

The latest information comes from Game Informer’s GTA 6 cover story, which includes insights from Rockstar developers and new screenshots from the upcoming game.

GTA 6 New Features: What Rockstar Has Revealed

Rockstar is expanding the open-world experience in GTA 6 with several systems that can make the environment feel more reactive. Weather conditions, wildlife and different activities will give players more reasons to explore Leonida beyond the game's main missions.

Among the most notable revelations are the revamped weather system, extreme storms, a large collection of wildlife and a map reportedly much bigger than GTA 5's world.

GTA 6 Adds Hurricanes and Real-Time Dynamic Weather

One of the most notable new features is the introduction of hurricanes and tropical storms.

Rockstar has rebuilt the weather system to make conditions more localized and persistent. As a result, players may encounter different weather conditions in different parts of Leonida at the same time.

For example, one area could experience heavy rainfall while another part of the map remains sunny.

The game's improved wind system will also interact with the environment. Wind can affect characters' hair, move debris across rooftops and cause grass and other vegetation to react to changing conditions.

Rockstar has not yet confirmed how frequently hurricanes or other extreme weather events will occur.

GTA 6 Will Feature More Than 170 Animal Species

Wildlife is another major part of Rockstar's plan to create a more realistic open world.

GTA 6 will reportedly feature more than 170 animal species, including around 60 bird species and over 30 mammals.

Players will encounter a wide variety of creatures while exploring Leonida, including:

  • Alligators
  • Flamingos
  • Pelicans
  • Sharks
  • Turtles
  • Other land and marine wildlife

Some animals will also offer additional exploration opportunities. Certain species can reportedly be tracked, while some wildlife will be categorized as rare, discoverable or legendary.

This could make wildlife exploration another activity for players who want to experience the world outside the game's missions.

GTA 6 Map: Leonida Could Be Twice the Size of GTA 5

The GTA 6 map is also expected to be significantly larger than the world featured in GTA 5.

Rockstar has described Leonida as its largest map yet, with the new information suggesting that it is roughly twice the size of GTA 5's map.

The expansive world will feature different environments and locations, giving players a broader area to explore.

GTA 6 Regions: Explore Vice City and Five More Areas

The Leonida map will reportedly be divided into six major regions, each offering a different setting and atmosphere.

  • Vice City
  • Leonida Keys
  • Grassrivers
  • Port Gellhorn
  • Ambrosia
  • Mount Kalaga National Park

From urban areas and coastal locations to natural environments, these regions are expected to provide considerable variety across the GTA 6 world.

GTA 6 Open World Adds Kayaking, Diving and More Activities

Rockstar is also giving players more things to do outside the main story.

The upcoming game will reportedly feature several recreational and adventure activities, including:

  • Kayaking
  • Scuba diving
  • Jet skiing
  • Mini golf
  • Billiards
  • Base jumping
  • Racing

These activities could add more depth to GTA 6's open-world gameplay and encourage players to explore different parts of Leonida.

How GTA 6 Is Creating a More Realistic Living World

The combination of dynamic weather, hurricanes, reactive wind, diverse wildlife and a larger map shows how Rockstar is adding more environmental detail to GTA 6.

The world is being designed to remain active even when players are not completing missions. Weather can change from one location to another, animals can be discovered in different environments and various activities can be used to explore the map.

GTA 6 New Details Make Exploration More Exciting

The latest GTA 6 details highlight Rockstar's focus on creating a more dynamic and interactive open world. From extreme weather and wildlife to new regions and recreational activities, Leonida is set to offer considerably more than the traditional mission-based experience.

Rockstar is expected to share additional information about GTA 6 gameplay, characters, missions, vehicles and other open-world features as the game's release gets closer.
