Kuwait is set to make history by hosting the inaugural Asian Esports and Mind Sports Games in 2027. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has signed the Host City Contract with Kuwait for the first edition of the new continental multi-sport event.
The Games are expected to bring together around 4,000 athletes from across Asia, creating a dedicated platform for esports and traditional mind sports. However, the OCA is yet to announce the exact dates, esports titles and complete competition programme.
Kuwait Confirmed as Host for Asian Esports and Mind Sports Games 2027
The signing of the Host City Contract officially sets Kuwait as the host of the first Asian Esports and Mind Sports Games. The event will bring together athletes competing in esports as well as various mind-sport disciplines.
The competition is expected to be held every two years, although the OCA is yet to release the complete schedule and format for future editions.
The new event represents a significant change in the way esports will feature in the OCA's continental sporting calendar.
Asian Esports Games 2027 Expected to Welcome 4,000 Athletes
The inaugural Games could attract approximately 4,000 athletes from different Asian countries. The expected participation would make the Kuwait edition a major multi-sport gathering.

When Will Asian Esports and Mind Sports Games 2027 Take Place?
Although Kuwait has been confirmed as the host city, the official dates for the 2027 Asian Esports and Mind Sports Games have not yet been announced.
The OCA is also yet to reveal the full competition programme, participating esports titles and detailed event schedule.
The Games are expected to follow a biennial format, meaning future editions could be held every two years.
Why Esports Is Leaving the Asian Games After Aichi-Nagoya 2026
The creation of the new Games follows the OCA's decision to remove esports from the Asian Games after the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 edition.
The OCA Executive Board approved the removal of esports from the Asian Games after 2026 and the creation of a separate Asian Esports and Mind Games event in November 2024.
As a result, Aichi-Nagoya 2026 will be the final Asian Games featuring esports as a medal event under the current arrangement.
From 2027, esports athletes will have a separate continental competition through the Asian Esports and Mind Sports Games.

Asian Esports and Mind Sports Games to Become a New Continental Stage
The new event will provide Asian esports players with a dedicated platform after the sport's removal from the Asian Games.

The second edition of the Asian Esports and Mind Sports Games could take place in the Philippines in 2029.
Manila has reportedly expressed interest in hosting the event and has stepped forward as a potential host city. However, the final decision is still pending.
The OCA is expected to make the decision regarding the 2029 host at the 2027 OCA General Assembly in Doha.
If selected, the Philippines would become the second host of the new continental competition after Kuwait.
What the New Esports Games Mean for South Korean Players
The creation of the new event could have particular significance for South Korean esports athletes because of the country's military service exemption rules.
South Korean regulations connect certain military service exemptions with results achieved at designated international sporting events. These include winning a gold medal at the Asian Games or achieving a third-place finish or higher at the Olympic Games.
The new Asian Esports and Mind Sports Games does not currently meet those criteria. Therefore, medals won at the 2027 event are not expected to provide the same military service exemption.
Unless the relevant regulations change, Aichi-Nagoya 2026 will remain the final Asian Games opportunity for Korean esports players to earn an exemption through an Asian Games gold medal.

The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in 2026 will mark the end of the current arrangement for esports at the continental multi-sport event.
