Former Bangladesh ODI captain Tamim Iqbal, a cricketing legend with over 15,000 international runs, suffered a heart attack during a Dhaka Premier League (DPL) match on Monday. The 36-year-old was leading Mohammedan Sporting Club against Shinepukur Cricket Club in Savar when he experienced chest discomfort shortly after the toss. He was immediately rushed to Fazilatunnesa Hospital on Dhaka’s outskirts for treatment.
Debashis Chowdhury, a medical officer of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), confirmed the incident to AFP, stating, “Tamim suffered a heart attack. His heart has started to function better, and he’s currently under observation.” The medical team is working diligently to ensure his recovery, though no further details on his condition have been released as of Monday evening.
Tariqul Islam, a Mohammedan Sporting Club official, appealed to fans, saying, “Please pray for Tamim’s quick recovery.” The BCB also canceled its scheduled board meeting, with several members heading to the hospital to support the cricketer and his family.
Tamim participated in the toss for the 50-over match but soon reported chest pain. After receiving initial treatment on the field, authorities planned to airlift him to Dhaka via helicopter. However, logistical issues at the BKSP ground prevented this, and he was transported to Fazilatunnesa Hospital by road instead. The sudden health scare halted the game and sent shockwaves through the cricketing community.
Tamim Iqbal, who retired from international cricket in January 2025, is a household name in Bangladesh. Representing the nation in 391 matches across all formats between 2007 and 2023, he remains the only Bangladeshi batsman to score centuries in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is. Since retiring, Tamim has been active in domestic cricket and TV commentary.
In his retirement post on Facebook, he wrote, “My chapter in international cricket is over. I’ve been away for some time, and the gap will not close. Every cricketer has the right to decide their future, and I’ve taken my time to make this decision.” Despite requests from captain Nazmul Hossain and the selection panel to reconsider, Tamim chose to follow his heart, stepping away from the national team to focus on new ventures.
The news of Tamim’s heart attack has sparked an outpouring of support from fans, teammates, and cricketing figures worldwide. Social media platforms are flooded with prayers and well-wishes for the former captain, whose legacy as a leader and batsman continues to inspire. “It’s a difficult time for all of us,” Chowdhury added, reflecting the nation’s collective concern.
As Tamim remains under medical care, Bangladesh waits anxiously for updates on his health. His contributions to cricket and his resilience on and off the field make his recovery a priority for fans and the sporting community alike.
