India’s Sawan Barwal created history at the Asian Games 2026 by winning the silver medal in the men’s marathon. Barwal completed the race in 2:11:37, setting a new personal best and improving his own national record.
The historic silver also ended India’s 44-year wait for a men’s marathon medal at the Asian Games. Barwal remained at the front for much of the race in Nagoya before Japan’s Ichitaka Yamashita made a decisive move in the closing stages to win gold.
Sawan Barwal Wins Silver in Asian Games 2026 Men’s Marathon
Sawan Barwal produced a remarkable performance to finish second in the men’s marathon at the Asian Games 2026.
Barwal crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 11 minutes and 37 seconds to claim the silver medal. Japan’s Ichitaka Yamashita won gold with a time of 2:10:49, while China’s Pedyu Feng secured bronze after clocking 2:12:13.
Barwal finished 48 seconds behind Yamashita but remained in contention for the gold medal until the final stages of the race.
Sawan Barwal Leads Marathon Race Before Yamashita’s Late Surge
Barwal showed impressive pace from the beginning and quickly established himself among the leading runners.
He was second at the 5km mark after clocking 15:28. By the 10km checkpoint, the Indian athlete had moved into first place.
Barwal continued to control the race at several important stages:
- 5km: 15:28 – Second position
- 10km: Took the lead
- 15km: 47:35 – Remained in front
- 20km: 1:02:35 – Continued to lead
- 21.1km: 1:05:54 – Led at halfway
- 25km: 1:18:19 – Maintained the lead
- 30km: Moved to second after Yamashita caught up
- 35km: Regained the lead
- 40km onwards: Yamashita moved ahead
- Finish: Silver medal in 2:11:37
Yamashita eventually produced a strong final push after the 40km mark and created enough distance to secure the gold.

Asian Games 2026: Sawan Barwal’s Marathon Race Timeline
The Indian runner stayed at the front for a significant portion of the competition. His ability to maintain a fast pace through the opening 25km put him in a strong position to challenge for the gold.
At 30km, Yamashita closed the gap and moved ahead by one second. Barwal responded at 35km and briefly regained the lead.
However, the Japanese runner had the stronger finish and pulled away during the final kilometres. Barwal still held on to second place and secured a historic silver medal.
India Ends 44-Year Wait for Asian Games Marathon Medal
Sawan Barwal’s silver medal ended India’s 44-year wait for a men’s marathon medal at the Asian Games.
India’s previous medal in the event came at the 1982 Asian Games in Delhi, where H.K. Sitaram won bronze.
India had also won two medals in the marathon at the 1951 Asian Games. Chhota Singh won gold, while Surat Singh Mathur secured bronze.
Barwal’s achievement is particularly significant because his silver medal is India’s first men’s marathon medal at the Asian Games outside India.

Sawan Barwal Breaks National Marathon Record Again in Nagoya
Barwal also produced a record-breaking performance in Nagoya.
His time of 2:11:37 improved his previous national record of 2:11:58, which he had set at the Rotterdam Marathon in April 2026.
Before Barwal’s Rotterdam performance, the Indian national marathon record had belonged to Shivnath Singh. Singh had recorded 2:12:00 in 1978, meaning the record had stood for around 48 years.
Barwal first broke that mark in Rotterdam and has now improved his own record by another 21 seconds at the Asian Games.
Ichitaka Yamashita Wins Gold, Pedyu Feng Takes Marathon Bronze
Japan’s Ichitaka Yamashita finished first in the men’s marathon with a time of 2:10:49.
China’s Pedyu Feng completed the podium with a bronze-medal finish in 2:12:13.
The final stages proved decisive, with Yamashita producing a strong finish after Barwal had led the race for several stretches.
Asian Games 2026 Marathon: Kartik Karkera Finishes 17th
India’s other participant in the men’s marathon, Kartik Karkera, finished 17th among 19 competitors.
While Karkera could not challenge for the podium, Barwal’s silver medal gave India a major result in the marathon event at the Asian Games 2026.
