Meanwhile, Head Coach Gautam Gambhir hinted during the pre-match press conference at who might get the opportunity at No. 3. Backing Sai Sudharsan, Gambhir said:
"Sai Sudharsan hasn't had many opportunities at No. 3. I believe he deserves a fair run at this position. He isn't in poor form and has scored over 700 runs in the IPL. If we judge a player based on just 4-5 matches, we won't be able to build a team."

Head Coach Gautam Gambhir's statement makes it clear that Sai Sudharsan will be given preference over Devdutt Padikkal in the playing XI for the Test match against Afghanistan. It remains to be seen how well Sudharsan capitalizes on this significant opportunity.
