Major Relief for Former Indian Cricketer Jacob Martin: Patiala House Court Acquits Him in 22-Year-Old Criminal Case

Delhi's Patiala House Court has fully acquitted former Indian cricketer Jacob Martin of all charges in a 22-year-old criminal case. The case stemmed from an FIR registered in 2004, in which he was accused of fraud and forgery under Sections 420, 468, 471, and 120B of the IPC, as well as Section 12 of the Passport Act.

Former right-handed batsman Jacob Martin played 10 One Day Internationals (ODIs) for the Indian national team, scoring 158 runs at an average of 22.57.

What was the 22-year-old case about?

  • Allegation regarding a fake immigration stamp: The case dates back to 2004, when a player from the cricket team touring England stayed back after his visa expired and returned to India using a fake immigration stamp; he was apprehended at Delhi Airport.
  • Lack of evidence: The court found no concrete evidence of Martin's control over the Ajwa Sports Club, nor any proof of his involvement in illegal financial transactions or fraudulent travel arrangements. Several witnesses also failed to substantiate the allegations.
  • Implicated due to his profile: Martin clarified that his name was not even mentioned in the original FIR; however, he was dragged into the case during the investigation simply because he was a well-known international cricketer.

Lost Railway Job Due to the Case

As a result of this legal battle, Jacob Martin endured immense mental stress and career setbacks for 22 years:

  • He lost his permanent job with Indian Railways due to false allegations.
  • For a long period, he received no support or response from the BCCI or cricket boards.
  • After receiving a clean chit from the court, Martin described it as the biggest turnaround of his life and a moment of relief.
