IPL 2025: How many players can be retained in the IPL mega auction?

There is a lot of excitement about IPL 2025. Even though the auction is getting delayed and the season is to be played next year, the preparations of the teams have started. Meanwhile, the wait is on how many players the teams will be able to retain before the auction. The BCCI has not yet issued any rules for this. Earlier it was believed that the picture would be clear by August 31, but now the date seems to be increasing.

Before the last mega auction, there was permission to retain four players:

Every time before the auction in the Indian Premier League, as per the rules of the BCCI, the teams have to release and retain their players. Talking about the last time, the teams could retain any four players from their squad. In this, the rule of three Indian and one foreign player or two Indian and two foreign players was applicable. After this, the rest of the players are considered to be released automatically. Whether this will happen this time too or there will be some change, it is not clear yet. However, the BCCI recently called a meeting of all the IPL franchises in Mumbai, so that a consensus could be reached by talking to everyone. But everyone had their own opinion, so its announcement was postponed.

IPL retention policy may be released in the first week of September:

The BCCI talked to all the franchises and then postponed the final decision. Earlier it was known that the new rules would be announced by August 31. But now a report by Cricinfo has revealed that the final announcement will be made by the BCCI in the first week of September. Only after the rules are released, the teams will make a list of the players they are going to retain. While this will increase the work of the teams on one hand, it can also increase the heartbeat of the players. The fewer players are allowed to be retained, the more players will have to be released.

Some weak teams, whose performance has not been good in the last two or three years, want minimum retention so that more big players can enter the auction and they can rebuild their team. On the other hand, teams that are consistently performing well want more retention so that they can retain their core. This is the reason why teams are eagerly waiting for the retention policy. It remains to be seen what the final decision is.
