The Indian cricket team will reach the historic milestone of its 600th Test match with the first Test against Sri Lanka, starting in Galle on Saturday (August 15). Leading the team in this landmark match on the country's Independence Day is a truly special occasion for captain Shubman Gill.
In the pre-match press conference, Captain Gill spoke candidly about the WTC final equation, Jasprit Bumrah's absence, the selection of fast bowlers, and Sai Sudharsan's fitness.

Speaking about this special occasion, Shubman Gill said:
"It is a huge honor to captain the country in its 600th Test, and doing so on Independence Day makes the moment even more glorious."
Gill mentioned that he now feels completely comfortable with the responsibilities of captaincy, and the team's entire focus is on delivering a stellar performance on the field.
Need to Win 6-7 Tests for the WTC Final
To remain in contention for the World Test Championship (WTC) final, India must secure consecutive wins in upcoming matches.
- The Goal: According to Gill, India needs to win at least 6 to 7 Test matches in the upcoming fixtures to stay in the race for the final.
- Upcoming Schedule: After Sri Lanka, the Indian team is set to play a two-match Test series in New Zealand, followed by a high-voltage five-match Test series against Australia on home soil.
Bumrah's Absence and the Fast Bowling Dilemma: Gurnoor or Prasidh?
Regarding taking the field without Jasprit Bumrah, Gill described it as an excellent opportunity for new players to step up and shoulder responsibility. Meanwhile, regarding the selection of a second fast bowler to partner Mohammed Siraj, he said:
- Gurnoor Brar: Praising him, Gill noted that he possesses excellent pace and can extract extra bounce even with the older ball.
- Prasidh Krishna: Prasidh Krishna, who displayed impressive form in the practice match, is also a strong contender.
Gill acknowledged that selecting a second pacer for the playing XI would be a tough decision, given the spin-friendly conditions in Galle.
Sai Sudharsan's injury and support for youngsters
Providing an update on Sai Sudharsan's injury, the captain clarified that no risks could be taken given the demands of Test cricket. Although Sudharsan has not fully recovered, the team has complete faith in its 15-member squad. Gill reiterated that new and young players would be given ample time and support to find their rhythm.
