KL Rahul survived a major scare on Day 4 of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka in Galle, thanks to a timely call from Devdutt Padikkal. After the on-field umpire ruled Rahul LBW, Padikkal immediately advised his batting partner to take the DRS review. The decision turned out to be crucial as ball tracking showed that the delivery was missing the stumps.
India had already lost an early wicket in their second innings, putting pressure on the middle order. Rahul and Padikkal then looked to rebuild the innings and put together another important partnership.
KL Rahul Given Out, Padikkal’s Quick Advice Changes Everything
The incident took place during the 11th over of India’s second innings. Sri Lankan spinner Jayasuriya bowled the final delivery of the over, with Rahul failing to connect as the ball struck his pads.
Sri Lanka immediately appealed, and the on-field umpire raised his finger to give Rahul out. The Indian batter appeared ready to walk back to the pavilion, but Padikkal quickly spoke to him and suggested taking the review.
Rahul trusted his teammate's judgement and opted for DRS.
DRS Reveals Ball Was Missing the Stumps
The replay brought immediate relief to the Indian camp. Ball-tracking showed that the delivery would have missed the stumps, meaning the on-field LBW decision had to be overturned.
Rahul was declared not out, and he then hugged Padikkal to acknowledge his crucial advice.
The incident highlighted the strong understanding between the two Karnataka teammates. Having played together in domestic cricket, Rahul and Padikkal appeared to have a clear understanding of the situation under pressure.
Rahul and Padikkal Continue Their Strong Partnership
The pair had already shared a century partnership during India's first innings. Their partnership in the second innings also became important after India lost an early wicket.
Padikkal's awareness at the crucial moment once again showed why communication between batting partners can make a major difference in Test cricket.
KL Rahul Fails to Capitalise on DRS Lifeline
Despite getting a second chance, Rahul could not convert the opportunity into a big score.
Jayasuriya remained the bowler when Rahul was dismissed in the 15th over. The Indian batter attempted to play an attacking shot but failed to time it properly and ended up giving a catch to Ratnayake.
Rahul departed for 35 runs off 47 balls, including two fours and two sixes.
Padikkal's quick thinking had saved Rahul from a possible dismissal, but the Indian batter was unable to make the most of the lifeline and was back in the pavilion only a few overs later.
