Opener Jake Weatherald, who failed to perform in the first match, has been dropped from the team. Left-handed batsman Matt Renshaw has been brought back in his place. Renshaw had previously made headlines by scoring a magnificent century against Pakistan in 2016-17 at the age of 20. He will now be seen opening the batting in a Test match once again, having last done so in 2023.

Given the weather conditions and the nature of the pitch in Central Queensland, there was speculation that veteran spinner Nathan Lyon might be dropped to make way for Scott Boland. Captain Pat Cummins had initially mentioned that the selectors wanted a little more time to consider the option of fielding four fast bowlers versus including a spinner. However, following a pitch-side meeting, the selectors decided to retain Lyon. Meanwhile, Marnus Labuschagne, who has been struggling with poor form, has also managed to hold onto his spot at number 3.
