Indian cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid has rejected media reports which were claiming that Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer have been kept out of the T20 series against Afghanistan due to disciplinary reasons.
Many people were surprised when Ishan Kishan was not included in the T-20 series against Afghanistan. Rahul Dravid clarified on Wednesday that Ishan Kishan had requested for a break in the South Africa tour due to mental fatigue. He said that Ishan Kishan's request was accepted by the team management.
Dravid said that Ishan Kishan himself is not available for selection since then but will return to domestic cricket when he considers himself fit. Rahul Dravid said, "It is not like this (disciplinary reason) at all." Ishan Kishan himself is not available for selection. Ishaan himself had requested for a break and we had accepted it in South Africa. Dravid said these things while talking to journalists before the T-20 series starting with Afghanistan.
KL Rahul is the favorite wicketkeeper-batsman in ODI. On the other hand, Jitesh Sharma and Sanju Samson have got a chance as wicketkeeper-batsman in the T-20 series. It is not yet clear whether Rishabh Pant will be fit till the T20 World Cup or not. There were similar speculations about Shreyas Iyer that he was not included in the T-20 with Afghanistan due to indiscipline, but Dravid also rejected these claims on Wednesday.
Rahul Dravid said, "Shreyas Iyer's case also has nothing to do with indiscipline." Only he is not in this series. There are many batsmen in the team. He was not even in the T-20 team with South Africa. It is a difficult task to give place to all the players in the playing 11.
Dravid said, "He is a good player but not everyone can get a place in the playing 11." There was no talk about indiscipline in the case of Shreyas Iyer in the conversation with the selectors. Shreyas Iyer will play Ranji Trophy for Mumbai team against Andhra Pradesh on Friday.
The three-match T20 series with Afghanistan is starting from today i.e. 11th January in Mohali. Rahul Dravid said on Wednesday that captain Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the first choices for openers. Virat Kohli was also included in the playing 11 but he has decided not to play the first match citing personal reasons.
Ishan Kishan has been traveling with Team India continuously for some time now but he gets a chance to play in a match only when one or more regular players are not available. It is being said that Ishaan Kishan is suffering from mental fatigue due to this difficulty and uncertainty. The discussion of his mental fatigue started when he withdrew himself from the Test series with South Africa.
Ishan Kishan had asked BCCI for a break. He had said that he has been traveling continuously for the last one year, so he needs a break. The team management had talked to the selectors in this matter and their request was accepted. Ishan Kishan has been included in every Indian team since January 3, 2023, but he got very little chance to play. Last year in the World Cup, he got a chance to play only in the first two matches.
When Shubman Gill returned after recovering from dengue, he was out of the playing eleven. Whereas KL Rahul got attention as a wicketkeeper. After that, Ishan Kishan played three matches in the T-20 series with Australia and scored half-centuries in two. Ishan Kishan was part of the T-20 series in South Africa but the team management gave priority to Jitesh Sharma. Kishan was part of the Test series with South Africa but he had decided to take a break.
Ishan Kishan was also a part of the Indian team that went to Australia from February 9 to March 22 last year. Ishan Kishan could not play in all four test matches with Australia because the team management chose KS Bharat. With this, he got a chance to play in only one of the three ODI matches.
Ishan Kishan played the entire IPL season for Mumbai Indians. He was taken to England as the second wicketkeeper in the final of the World Test Championship. After this he was on West Indies tour from 12 July to 13 August. Ishan Kishan got a chance to play the first two test matches.
Ishan Kishan made his debut in the middle of the year 2021. Since then, he has been a regular player of Team India, but till now he has got a chance to play only 27 ODIs and 32 T20 matches. He has rarely got back to back matches. His role also kept changing with the team management. Sometimes he was taken as a backup opener and sometimes as a specialist keeper.
Ishan Kishan has never been the first choice as a keeper and opener in any format. Perhaps for this reason Ishan Kishan requested to take a break citing mental fatigue. Whenever Ishan Kishan got a chance, he did not disappoint. When Team India progressed with Shikhar Dhawan opening, he scored a double century in the ODI against Bangladesh.
Despite this, Ishan Kishan did not get the place of Shikhar Dhawan. Shubman Gill became the favorite for this place. According to media reports, after taking a break from the Test series with South Africa, Ishan Kishan was seen partying in Dubai. This is being seen as indiscipline.
However, Rahul Dravid himself has denied the issue of indiscipline. It is also being claimed in media reports that Ishan Kishan did not want to play T-20 series with Australia after the World Cup but his request was not accepted by BCCI.
It is being said that Ishaan Kishan had said that he was tired of traveling and wanted to spend time with his family but he was seen partying in Dubai. A claim is also being made that Ishaan Kishan had gone to Dubai to celebrate his brother's birthday.
