This is a pitch which is made somewhere away from the field or venue and is later brought to the stadium and laid. Drop in pitches are mostly used in Australia, because not only cricket but also games like football, rugby are played in the grounds here. In such a situation, once the cricket season is over, the drop in pitches are removed and first sand and then artificial grass is grown so that the field is ready for use again.

For example, if we talk about the pitch of Melbourne Cricket Ground, its length is 24 meters, width is three meters and depth is 20 cm. After the layer of black soil, grass is grown on top and this entire process takes place in a steel frame. When a cricket match takes place, these pitches weighing 30 tonnes are lifted from a customized trailer and placed on top of a 27 meter deep cement slab. Since this pitch is made inside a steel frame, it is tough and does not break like traditional pitches. Home teams keep more or less grass to take advantage of the pitch.
