Pakistan Happy to Host Asia Cup

The Asia Cup 2023 will be played in Pakistan and Sri Lanka under the 'hybrid model'. Asia Cup matches will be held in Pakistan-Sri Lanka, but its official host will be PCB. Najam Sethi has praised Asian Cricket Council President Jai Shah after getting the hosting rights. The dates for the Asia Cup 2023 were announced on June 15 (Thursday).

Hybrid Model

Under 'Hybrid Model' will be played in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Four matches will be played in Pakistan and 9 matches on Sri Lankan ground. The Asia Cup will be played from 31 August to 17 September. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Najam Sethi's happiness knows no bounds after the release of the tournament dates.

It was PCB chief Najam Sethi who proposed the 'hybrid model'. Under this model, Najam Sethi had demanded that Pakistan's group matches should be organized in his country except the match against India, while India had asked to play its matches in another country. Asia Cup matches will be held in Sri Lanka along with Pakistan, but its official host will be Pakistan. Najam Sethi has praised Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Jay Shah after getting the hosting rights.

Najam Sethi

Najam Sethi said in a statement to the Pakistan Cricket Board, 'I am happy that the Asian Cricket Council has accepted our hybrid model for the Asia Cup 2023. This means that PCB will continue as the host of this tournament and organize matches in association with Sri Lanka. This was necessary due to the Indian cricket team not touring Pakistan.

Our fans would have liked to see the Indian cricket team play in Pakistan for the first time in 15 years, but we understand the BCCI's position,” says Sethi. Like PCB, BCCI also needs government approval to tour other countries. This will be the first time since 2008 that a multinational cricket tournament will be played in Pakistan. Fifteen years ago, Pakistan hosted the Asia Cup.

Najam Sethi praised Jai Shah and said, I appreciate the efforts of Jai Shah to strengthen the Asian Cricket Council. Our endeavor is to collectively protect each other's interests and provide opportunities and platforms to emerging Asian countries

Six teams going to participate in the tournament

This time the Asia Cup will be played in the format of 50 overs. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Nepal are going to participate in Asia Cup 2023. India, Nepal and Pakistan are included in the same group. Whereas Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan will remain in the second group. Two teams each from both the groups will reach the Super 4.

Then a total of 6 matches will be played in the Super-4 under the round robin format. After this, two teams will reach the finals and the title match will be played between them, thus a total of 13 matches including the final will be played in the Asia Cup 2023. Matches in Pakistan will be held in Lahore while matches in Sri Lanka will be held in Kandy and Pallekele.

Team India is dominating in the Asia Cup. There have been a total of 15 seasons of the Asia Cup so far, in which the Indian team has won the title the most 7 times (1984, 1988, 1990–91, 1995, 2010, 2016, 2018). While Sri Lanka is at number two, which has been champion 6 times (1986, 1997, 2004, 2008, 2014, 2022). Pakistan team was able to win the title only twice (2000, 2012)
