Australian cricket legend Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from both international and domestic cricket. Over the course of his 14-year career in Australia, Maxwell played 286 matches. He has also bid farewell to List A and first-class cricket; however, he will continue to play in T20 franchise cricket.
Maxwell had already retired from ODI cricket in June last year, though he remained available for the T20 side. He also participated in the 2026 T20 World Cup, which was held in Australia. In a video clip, while reflecting on his career, Maxwell noted that with the Olympics and the World Cup approaching in 2028, Australia will likely need a younger and more energetic team—making the coming months crucial for the team's development. Speaking on 'The Final Word' production, Glenn Maxwell said, "It would have been great to play a farewell match at the MCG, but I am very clear about the direction things are heading. With the Olympics on the horizon, I expect to see some significant changes over the next 12 to 24 months.
