Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes Joe Root can break legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar's record for most runs in Test cricket, provided the England batsman's hunger for runs and consistency continues for the next four years.
Root has become the seventh batsman to cross the 12000 run mark in Test cricket. He has scored 12027 runs in 143 Test matches so far. Tendulkar has 15921 runs in 200 Test matches.
Ponting has scored 13378 runs in 168 Test matches and is second on this list. Former Australia captain Ponting said in the ICC review, 'Root can break this record. He is 33 years old and just 3000 runs behind. It remains to be seen how many Tests he plays.'
He further said, 'If Joe Root plays 10 to 14 Tests a year and scores 800 to 1000 runs every year, he can reach there in three to four years. If the English batsman's hunger for runs remains intact, he can break Sachin Tendulkar's great record.'
