Suchika Tariyal becomes India's first Asian Games MMA medalist: India is once again making waves in the sporting world at the Asian Games. This time, history has been created not in a traditional sport, but in the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) ring. 36-year-old Indian fighter Suchika Tariyal has brought glory to the nation by winning a bronze medal in the women's 60kg MMA event.
This marks India's first-ever medal in the MMA event, which was introduced for the first time at the current Asian Games.

36-year-old Suchika Tariyal is not just an MMA athlete; she has had a long and illustrious career in combat sports. She has represented India in four World Championships and over 30 international events.
Suchika Tariyal's career and journey
- 2017: Made a winning debut in MMA, followed by a seven-year hiatus from the sport.
- 2022: Represented India in Judo at the Commonwealth Games.
- 2023: Represented the country in Kurash at the Asian Games.
- 2024: Became a Jiu-Jitsu World Champion.
In November 2024, she signed a multi-fight contract with BRAVE Combat Federation in the women's strawweight division.

Suchika Tariyal secured her spot in the semi-finals and guaranteed a medal for India by handing a crushing 2-0 defeat to Mongolia's Altanchimeg Baglama in the quarter-finals.
In a thrilling and fiercely contested semi-final match against Singapore's Hui Hoon Teo, she suffered a 0-2 defeat in a bout that went into an extra round. Although she missed out on the gold medal, she made history by clinching the bronze. With this bronze medal, India's total medal count at the Asian Games reached four, three of which came from the shooting range.

Speaking about her transition and preparations, Suchika said:
"Judo prepared me for Mixed Martial Arts, which represents the pinnacle of combat sports for me. Thanks to Judo, I was already proficient in ground fighting and grappling. For MMA, I simply needed to learn the standing game and striking skills. Therefore, the transition from Judo to MMA wasn't difficult for me. Mixed Martial Arts tests a wide range of skills, requiring an athlete to be prepared in every aspect."

Administrative Challenges and Switch to MMA
Suchika's path to success has not been easy. Even after becoming the Jiu-Jitsu World Champion in 2024, she had to contend with instability in sports administration.
In January, the structure of the Jiu-Jitsu team for the 2026 Asian Games was abruptly altered, and the team was disbanded. The path she had been working hard towards suddenly closed off. However, instead of giving up, Suchika Tariyal immediately pivoted and participated in MMA trials, where she proved her mettle.

To prepare for the fierce competition at the Asian Games, Suchika Tariyal underwent rigorous training day and night under the guidance of Coach Nikhil Kundar at the 'One Punch Academy' in Andheri, Mumbai.
Alongside her successes in the arena, Suchika has also garnered significant popularity outside the ring:
- National Honors: She has been felicitated by the President and Prime Minister of India for her athletic excellence, her impact on the youth, and for serving as a role model for women's empowerment.
