Dipa Karmakar won gold in Asian Championship

Dipa Karmakar became the first Indian gymnast to win the Asian Championships. Karmakar won gold medal at the Asian Women's Artistic Gymnastics Championship in Tashkent on Sunday. Karmakar has become the first Indian gymnast to win gold in the Asian gymnastics event.

Dipa was eighth in the qualification stage with a score of 12.650. Dipa scored a total of 13.566 in her two attempts in the final. Dipa was followed by two North Korean players, Kim Son Hyang (13.466, after 0.100 penalty) and Jo Kyung Byeol (12.966), who finished second and third respectively. Last year, Dipa did not get a place in the Indian team for the Asian Games.

Dipa Karmakar won second medal in Asian Championship. Earlier, Deepa had won the bronze medal in Hiroshima in 2015. Apart from Dipa, Ashish Kumar (Floor Exercise, Bronze, Surat, 2006) and Pranati Nayak (Vault, Ulaanbaatar, 2019 and Doha, 2022) from India have won bronze medals.

Did not get place in the team in Asiad 2022

Dipa did not get a place in the Indian gymnastics team for the Asian Games held in Hangzhou last year. The Gymnastic Federation of India (GFI) had sent the name of Dipa Karmakar. However, his name was removed by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) before getting the final approval from the Union Sports Ministry.

The star gymnast was eliminated due to not participating for a long time. In place of Dipa, Pranati Nayak and Pranati Das have got a place in the Asiad team of artistic gymnastics.

Dipa, who finished fourth in the Rio Olympics, won the bronze medal in gymnastics at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. She became the first female gymnast of India to do so. Apart from this, Karmakar finished fourth in the 2016 Olympics.

In February 2023, Dipa Karmakar failed the dope test. For this reason he was banned. According to the International Testing Agency (ITA), Dipa Karmakar was found guilty of taking the banned drug Higenamine in the sample taken out of competition by the International Gymnastic Federation. Deepa's samples were taken after the competition on 11 October 2021. The ban on him continued till July 10, 2023.
