Why Ishan Kishan Came at No. 5 Instead of No. 3 vs NZ?: In the first match of the five-match T20I series between India and New Zealand, a strategic change by Team India caught everyone's attention. Explosive wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, who typically bats in the top order specifically at the 'one-down' (number 3) position, came out to bat much lower, at number 5. This sudden shift down the order has left fans wondering why the team management made such a decision.

In this thrilling encounter at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, New Zealand batted first and posted a massive total of 225/4 in their allotted 20 overs. In response, India got off to an aggressive start, with Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma scoring runs at a rapid pace for the first wicket.

As wickets began to fall, Ishan Kishan who usually bats at number 3 was held back, eventually coming out to bat at number 5. He faced just 3 deliveries, scoring only 1 run, before being caught by Finn Allen off the bowling of Mitchell Santner.

There has been no official or definitive statement from the team management or the captain regarding this change in the batting order. However, according to information circulating within cricketing circles and from various sources, there could be a few strategic reasons behind this:

  • Fitness concerns during fielding: There is speculation that Ishan Kishan experienced some muscle stiffness while fielding during the first innings. As a precautionary measure and to avoid unnecessary risk, the team management decided against sending him out to bat during the opening overs.

Although these reasons have not been officially confirmed, Ishan’s appearance lower down the batting order is believed to be the result of either a strategic move by the team or a minor physical issue.
