Major Action by Cricket Australia: Experienced Fast Bowler Megan Schutt Suspended for Two Matches Over Prescription Medication Rule Violation

The Australian women’s cricket team has been dealt a significant blow. Experienced fast bowler Megan Schutt, who is currently in excellent form, has been suspended for two matches by Cricket Australia. As a result of this ban, she will miss the final match of the home T20I series against New Zealand, as well as the opening match of the domestic WBBL season.

Why was the ban imposed?

In an official statement, Cricket Australia explained that Megan Schutt was sanctioned for failing to comply with regulations regarding prescription medication, as outlined in the guidelines for Sports Science and Sports Medicine. The board clarified that the incident occurred "out of competition" and was in no way related to the use of performance-enhancing drugs. The two-match suspension applies to both international and domestic cricket.

Megan Schutt’s Response

33-year-old Megan Schutt immediately accepted the sanction and issued a statement acknowledging her mistake:

"I fully accept this sanction and apologize for failing to meet the standards expected of me. Although this incident occurred out of competition and was unrelated to performance, I recognize that it was my responsibility to adhere to the Sports Science and Sports Medicine guidelines, which I failed to do."

Impact on the Australian Team

Australia currently leads the three-match T20I series against New Zealand 2-0 and will look to complete a series sweep when they take the field in Sydney on Thursday.

Although Schutt did not play in the opening matches of this T20I series, she delivered an outstanding performance in the recently concluded ODI series against Bangladesh (part of the ICC Women's Championship), taking 10 wickets across 3 matches.

  • 1st T20I: October 18, North Sydney Oval (Australia won by 2 wickets)
  • 2nd T20I: October 20, North Sydney Oval (Australia won by 40 runs)
  • 3rd T20I: October 22, North Sydney Oval
