Asian Hockey Champions Trophy:Mohali Mayor Sarabjit Singh stated that hosting the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy in Punjab for the first time is a matter of great pride and joy for the entire state. He noted that it is due to the efforts of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann that Punjab has secured the opportunity to host this prestigious international hockey tournament. This will provide a significant boost to hockey and other sports in the state, while also encouraging the youth to take an interest in sports.

Mayor Sarabjit Singh mentioned that the league matches of the tournament will be held in Jalandhar from October 27 to November 2. Subsequently, the semi-finals, the final, and the match for third place will take place in Mohali on November 4 and 5.

Six prominent Asian teams India, Bangladesh, Japan, China, Malaysia, and South Korea—are participating in this prestigious tournament. These matches will further strengthen Punjab’s presence on the international sports map.

A Budget of Approximately ₹25 Crore

He stated that the government has allocated a budget of approximately ₹25 crore to upgrade sports stadiums to international standards. Of this, ₹16 crore is being spent on the upgradation of stadiums in Jalandhar, and about ₹8.90 crore is being invested in stadiums in Mohali. This investment will prove to be a milestone in strengthening the state's sports infrastructure.

Around 32 Stadiums in Mohali Alone

The Mayor further noted that the 'sports revolution' initiated under the Chief Minister's leadership is now yielding positive results. So far, the state government has distributed cash prizes totaling approximately ₹135 crore to around 40,000 athletes. Furthermore, new stadiums are being constructed across Punjab. In Mohali alone, about 32 stadiums are being built, which will provide local athletes with better training facilities and ample opportunities to hone their talent.

An Appeal to Encourage Athletes

Sarabjit Singh emphasized that promoting sports is not solely the government's responsibility but a collective duty of the entire society. He urged the people of Punjab to visit the stadiums in large numbers to cheer for and encourage the athletes. He added that entry to the stadiums for spectators during tournaments will be completely free of charge.

He also encouraged parents to involve their children in sports alongside their academic pursuits. He reiterated that the Mann-led government is committed to integrating sports into the culture of Punjab and guiding the youth toward a positive path.
