The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is currently seeking a new title sponsor for the Indian men's team's home international matches. However, the sponsorship process is making headlines for another reason: several major business categories such as tires, paints, and sportswear have been specifically excluded from the bidding process.
These restrictions are part of the BCCI's new 'Invitation to Tender' (ITT). Additionally, following the failure to secure a deal during the initial bidding process, reports indicate that the board is engaged in direct talks with companies such as Google Gemini, SBI Life, IDFC First Bank, and Spinny.
BCCI’s New Title Sponsorship Hunt
The BCCI had set a timeline for companies interested in acquiring title sponsorship rights for international matches played in India. However, as the initial process did not yield a successful agreement, the board decided to engage in direct talks with potential sponsors.
According to reports, companies such as Google Gemini, SBI Life, IDFC First Bank, and Spinny are being considered as potential partners. As of the time of these reports, no official announcement regarding a final agreement had been made. The title sponsorship package is commercially significant as it offers brand visibility during India's home international matches.
Which business categories has the BCCI excluded?
- Tyres, tubes and flaps
- Athleisure wear
- Performance wear
- Sports merchandise
- Sports equipment
- Paints
- Waterproofing products
- Wallpapers
Why Did BCCI Exclude Tyre, Paint and Sportswear Brands?
The primary reason for this appears to be the protection of the commercial rights of the BCCI and the Indian team's current sponsors.
- Apollo Tyres – Lead jersey sponsor of the Indian team
- Adidas – Indian team kit sponsor
- Asian Paints – BCCI Associate Partner
By barring other companies from the title sponsorship category, the BCCI can prevent rival brands from the same industry from associating with major Indian cricket sponsorship properties simultaneously. This principle is commonly known as 'category exclusivity.' It offers greater benefits to the incumbent sponsor associated with a specific property, as a direct competitor cannot gain significant visibility through another sponsorship position at the same time.
