Why Was Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Dropped from India U19 Squad?: 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is one of India's finest emerging cricketers. Having made his international debut against England, Vaibhav has already played 6 T20I matches for India. Despite this, the selectors have not included him in the squad for the upcoming Under-19 series against Australia.

On the other hand, Aryavir (son of former legend Virender Sehwag) and Anvay (son of Rahul Dravid) have been given a chance in the Under-19 team for this series. Consequently, every cricket fan is wondering: why has Vaibhav been left out of the Under-19 squad when he is just 15 years old and in excellent form?

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's exclusion is not due to poor form or disciplinary issues; rather, it stems from a very strict rule implemented by the BCCI.

The BCCI introduced a rule in 2016 stating that:

  • A player can participate in the Under-19 World Cup only once in their lifetime.

This simply means that if a player competes in the Under-19 World Cup at a young age such as 15 or 17 they will not be selected for the team again for a subsequent World Cup before turning 19, even if they remain age-eligible to play.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has already represented India in the 2026 Under-19 World Cup. Since he cannot play in the Under-19 World Cup again under BCCI rules, the selectors decided to give opportunities to other new players rather than having him occupy a spot in the Under-19 squad.

The selectors believe that Vaibhav has already proven himself at the highest level; therefore, it is now essential to groom new young players within the Under-19 setup.

The objective of this rule is to provide opportunities to new players and widen the talent pool. In 2018, star all-rounder Washington Sundar was also unable to play in the Under-19 World Cup again due to this same BCCI rule.
