Suryakumar Yadav: Suryakumar Yadav, who led the Indian cricket team to a historic T20 World Cup 2026 victory, has broken his silence regarding his removal from the captaincy and the squad immediately after the tournament.
Under the leadership of Surya who took charge of the T20 team in July 2024 India not only won multiple series while remaining unbeaten but also clinched the 2025 Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup title on March 8, 2026.
Despite this, the selectors dropped Suryakumar from the team, citing poor form, and appointed Shreyas Iyer as the new T20 captain.
Suryakumar Yadav's Major Revelation
Speaking on former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra's YouTube channel, Suryakumar Yadav opened up about his heartbreak. Surya said, "I sat at home for about a month and a half, wondering how this could possibly happen.
I had hoped to captain the Indian team through to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the next T20 World Cup." Surya revealed that three days prior to the team selection, the BCCI selection committee had called him to inform him that he would not be included in the squad for the England series, as it was time to build a team for the future.
He further said, "I smiled when my name wasn't in the team. Whenever a high-pressure situation arose during a match, I tried to stay calm. I hadn't expected this to happen.
I didn't react, because it wasn't my fault." Despite the tough decision, Surya told the selectors that the call they had made was surely in the team's best interest. You made the decision and informed me; there is no issue with that. I will keep playing, and whenever you feel the time is right, you can call me back into the team.
Suryakumar: Among India's Most Successful T20 Captains
Suryakumar Yadav holds one of the best T20 International captaincy records in the history of Indian cricket. Under his leadership, India played a total of 52 T20 matches; the team secured victories in 42 of them and suffered defeat in only eight.
This translates to a winning percentage of 80.76. Despite his sudden exit from the captaincy and the team, Suryakumar expressed gratitude for the opportunities he received and expressed confidence in making a comeback through domestic cricket in the future.
