The Impact Player Rule is likely to remain in the IPL in 2025

IPL 2025 is only 9 months away, but the hype has already begun. The IPL owners are scheduled to meet with the BCCI on July 31 to discuss a variety of subjects, one of which might be the impact of player regulation.

With the major auction taking place in December, IPL owners want a clear path forward as they await clarity on player retention and the viability of the 'Right to Match'.

However, according to the most recent source, the Impact player rule, which was implemented in 2022, is expected to remain for the 2025 edition as well.

The regulation has been widely attacked by experts since it prevents the development of an all-rounder. Last season, major players including Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma strongly opposed the impact player rule, arguing that it should be abolished entirely. However, stakeholders and IPL owners believe that the regulation has made the league more fierce and intriguing.

In other developments, the franchises are pushing for the Right to Match Option, as well as an increase in the number of retained players to eight.

'We will review every element with the franchisees and decide on the next line of action accordingly. We want a healthy discussion, and the only goal is to ensure that all franchises have an equal opportunity,' said a BCCI insider.

With less than a week till the IPL meeting, it will be fascinating to see how things play out between the owners and the board.
