Suchika Tariyal's Controversial Loss
Suchika Tariyal was facing Singapore's Hui Hoon Teo in the 60kg category MMA semi-final. It was a fiercely contested bout. Even after regulation time and overtime, the judges could not determine a winner. Initially, the judges declared Teo the winner, but the Indian team lodged a protest.
India paid a $1,000 fee to initiate a review of the decision, and a new panel of judges declared the match a draw after viewing the footage. However, despite the draw, Suchika lost the bout.
Suchika Lost Due to This Rule
According to the rules of the Asian Mixed Martial Arts Association, if a bout ends in a draw and subsequent tie-breakers also result in a tie, the decision is based on the morning weigh-in. The rule dictates that the lighter athlete is declared the winner.
Suchika weighed approximately 59.2 kg, while Teo weighed 58.5 kg; this meant Suchika was 700 grams heavier. Consequently, Teo was awarded the spot in the final, while Suchika received the bronze medal.
Suchika was deeply upset and distressed by this decision. She broke down in tears right there on the mat. Initially, she had even refused to shake hands with the referee and her opponent. Although Suchika secured India's first-ever MMA medal by winning the bronze, the reality is that she missed out on the opportunity to win gold.
