The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 is set to take place next year. Ahead of this, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have made a major announcement by appointing former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their head coach. Zaheer Khan's goal will be to lead Chennai to their sixth title in the upcoming IPL season.
Zaheer Khan has coached several teams
Since retiring as a player from the IPL in 2017, Zaheer Khan has taken on various roles. During his IPL career, he played for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians, and Delhi Capitals. Subsequently, ahead of the 2019 IPL season, Mumbai Indians appointed him as the 'Director of Cricket Operations'; he later also assumed the role of the team's 'Head of Global Development'.
Recently, Zaheer was also associated with Lucknow Super Giants. He had been appointed as the team's mentor for IPL 2025 but decided to part ways with the franchise ahead of the upcoming season.
Zaheer will now replace Stephen Fleming at CSK; Fleming had shouldered the responsibility of coaching the Chennai team for nearly 18 years, from 2009 to 2026. He played a pivotal role in Chennai Super Kings' success over the years. His long association with the franchise has now come to an end. He has taken up a new role with the England cricket team, having been appointed as the head coach of England's men's Test team in July.
Zaheer Expresses Gratitude on Joining CSK
Taking on a coaching role with CSK marks a significant milestone in Zaheer Khan's coaching career. As a player, Zaheer played 100 IPL matches and claimed 102 wickets at an average of 27.27. He also enjoyed a stellar international career for India, taking a total of 610 wickets across all three formats.
Upon joining CSK, Zaheer stated that it is an honor to be part of the franchise. He mentioned that he always enjoyed playing against Chennai during his playing days. Zaheer also spoke about the special atmosphere created by the 'Superfans' at Chepauk and expressed his excitement about becoming part of the legacy of a franchise with such a magnificent history.
