In response to the massive total of 503, Sri Lanka's first innings faltered against the Indian bowling attack. Apart from Sonal Dinusha (103) and Suriyabandara (80), no other batsman could hold their ground. The Sri Lankan team was bowled out for 290 runs, undone by the incisive bowling of Prasidh Krishna (3/52) and Manav Suthar (3/85). After securing a massive 213-run lead based on the first innings, India enforced the follow-on on Sri Lanka.

Facing the follow-on in the second innings, the Sri Lankan team refused to give up.
- Suriyabandara: Provided a solid start by playing a magnificent innings of 92 runs off 173 balls.
- Kamindu Mendis: Made a useful contribution of 55 runs in the middle order.
- Partnership between Dinusha and Nuwantha: After losing 6 wickets on the fourth day, Sonal Dinusha (133 not out) and Keshara Nuwantha (46) frustrated the Indian bowlers on the fifth day.
Batting for over 150 overs, Sri Lanka posted a strong score of 429/9 in the second innings and succeeded in securing a draw.
