Mirabai Chanu created history at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 on Wednesday by winning her maiden Asian Games medal. The Indian weightlifting star claimed silver in the women's 49kg category after recording a combined lift of 198kg.
The Tokyo Olympic silver medallist delivered a strong performance throughout the competition and successfully completed all three of her snatch attempts. Her silver medal adds another major international achievement to her decorated career.
Mirabai Chanu Wins Asian Games Silver After Lifting 198kg in 49kg Event
Chanu began her snatch campaign with a successful 83kg lift. She then increased her weight to 85kg in the second attempt before successfully completing 87kg in her final snatch attempt.
In the clean and jerk, the Indian weightlifter opened with 107kg. She then successfully lifted 111kg in her second attempt.
With 87kg in snatch and 111kg in clean and jerk, Chanu finished with a total of 198kg, which secured her the silver medal.

The 198kg total marked an important milestone in Chanu's Asian Games career. Despite missing out on the podium at the previous edition, she remained consistent under pressure in Aichi-Nagoya.
Her successful 87kg snatch and 111kg clean and jerk lifts helped her finish second in the women's 49kg category.
Ri Song Gum Wins Gold as Mirabai Chanu Takes 49kg Silver
North Korea's Ri Song Gum dominated the competition and won the gold medal with a total of 215kg.
Chanu finished second with 198kg, while Wijayana secured the bronze medal.
The result gave India another medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026 and placed Chanu on the Asian Games podium for the first time.
Mirabai Chanu Completes Major International Medal Collection
Chanu's Asian Games silver is significant because it completes her medal collection across the major international weightlifting competitions.
After Karnam Malleswari, Chanu became the second Indian weightlifter to win medals at the Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championships, Asian Championships and Commonwealth Championships.

Chanu had narrowly missed an Asian Games medal at Hangzhou 2023.
An injury forced her to withdraw from her final clean and jerk attempt, and she eventually finished fourth. That result left her outside the medal positions.
At Aichi-Nagoya 2026, Chanu returned to the Asian Games podium and turned her previous disappointment into a historic silver medal.
